Hello Little River Community!

Periodic updates are shared each week during the school year regarding school via phone, email, and text. See updates below!

Mark your calendars!

  • Open House, August 25, 5:30pm-7pm

  • First Day of School, August 29

News you can use!

  • COVID-19 Update: The Durham Public Schools Board of Education and administration continue to strongly recommend the wearing of face coverings, vaccinations, testing, and distancing where appropriate as mitigation strategies. DPS continues to invest in building improvements including ventilation upgrades to further protect our students, educators, and staff. DPS also continues to strongly encourage individuals to stay home when they are presenting symptoms that could indicate COVID-19.

  • School Nutrition Forms: Durham Public Schools' parents/guardians can apply for Free/Reduced Meals at any time throughout the school year. Applications are reviewed by DPS officials before granting free or reduced-price benefits. If you receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, all of your children who attend school qualify for free school meals. Participation in other federal assistance programs, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) also provides eligibility.  If you have any questions about your student's meal status, please contact 919-560-2370. DPS ENCOURAGEs ALL FAMILIES TO APPLY FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR.

  • Title 1 Notification: Little River will receive Title 1 funding in 2022-2023 to support school programming. Title 1 refers to a federal grant program that distributes funds to schools proportionate to their percentage of students that receive free and reduced meals. The Title 1 Program is intended to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high quality of education and reach grade-level proficiency. Learn more about how Little River utilizes Title 1 funds at our Open House event this week.

  • Bus schedules will be shared at Open House. We encourage families of bus riders to download the Here Comes the Bus app to your mobile phone. Get alerts to arrival times and track your child’s bus. Download the app here.

  • Growing Together: Learn about Little River’s path to Montessori by 2024-2025! For more than two years, Durham Public Schools has been reimagining student assignment practices for all DPS students. The next phase of Growing Together shares the collective vision for the five region model for our district. Durham Public Schools is seeking parent and community representation in its Implementation Advisory Work Groups as it continues its work through the Growing Together initiative. Individuals who would like to help DPS shape the future of student assignment in Durham may sign up to participate in a Regional Work Group. Click here to register. The deadline is Friday, September 2. For additional information, visit ENGAGE.dpsnc.net. The Work Group will ensure the voices of our families and community remain at the core of our next steps by

    • Advising on rules for student assignment and implementation for 2024-25 and beyond.

    • Representing our diverse community in consideration of the families that we serve.

    • Recommending strategies to reduce disruption for families while balancing constraints and capacity.
